At the Crossroads: A Native American Perspective on Self-Care

At the Crossroads

This photo was taken about a mile from our home. It is the Columbia River Gorge on a stormy, summer day. In our lives, we have stormy times, but when the sun breaks through the clouds and when the beautiful rainbow appears, it is a reflection of our lives and the beauty all around us. It stirs our hearts, our minds, and our very being. It renews us in a special way. It lifts our spirits to great heights on our road of life. This becomes an awareness of the other side, of the things we cannot see, and the beauty that appears to us when we walk the rainbow trail. It reflects the light on the earth, in the forest, on the rocks, and even, on us. The purple, red, orange, and yellow colors of the rainbow represent the colors of the sunrise and the sunset of each day. The purple light of the first phase of dawn and of the last phase of the sunset is the most healing light. Whenever possible stand in that light and rub it on your body. The green represents all the plants and the trees. The blue represents the water and the sky.

All Creation is represented by these colors or combinations of them. These colors are reflected through the perfect white light and the rain water in the air, the two essential ingredients for life. We are made thankful and mindful of these gifts for life from the Creator. Healing and nurturing come to us through this way of living. So, what does it mean to walk the Rainbow Trail? It means that you walk in beauty in a sacred manner. It means you honor the beauty above you, the beauty below you, and the beauty all around you. It means being aware of the gifts of the Creation of which you are a part. It means to strip away the baggage of life’s strivings and get back to the basics of what the rainbow represents. The next time you feel the storms of your life getting the best of you, go outside. Stand on the Earth Mother and raise your arms and give thanks for your very being. Imagine a rainbow covering you with all the colors. Take it in the palms of your hands and rub it on your face and arms and let it touch your heart. Imagine the perfect white light that created those colors surrounding you. Then you will become one with the earth and be centered within yourself. The rainbow is the Creator’s spirit touching down on the earth to remind us of these things. Never hesitate to go back to the crossroads and to start walking the Rainbow Trail. We will see you there.

Walk in Beauty,
Acarasara, We love you,
